This video shows how to match the hook to the type of fish you are targeting, the different between J-hooks and circle hooks, and when you should use different hooks.

As you will see in the video, we always recommend using circle hooks for larger live or dead baits when fishing with kids. They are less likely to stick in your skin, and it is better for the fish and conservation.

For small fish and for catching bait fish, it is usually better to use small j-hooks (like the small size 8 hooks in the video).

Remember to always match the hook to the size of the bait, not the fish you are targeting. Even the big fish can surprisingly be caught on small hooks, and you won’t get many bites if your hook is way to big for the bait you are using.
