As any saltwater fisherman knows, shrimp are one of the best all-around baits out there.

Dead or alive they can attract bites from all kinds of species of fish (especially inshore fish such as redfish, seatrout, snook, and black drum).

One of our favorite ways to use shrimp is actually to take dead (but still fresh) shrimp and rig them on a jig head (very similar to how you would rig an artificial shrimp on a jig head).

You simply rip the head off the shrimp, rig the jig through the center of the shrimp’s head, and then bring the hook point back through.

A great way to get a good deal on dead (but still fresh) shrimp is to ask your local bait shop or marina if they have any dead ones you can have. Many times they will either give them to you for free or really cheap. Just make sure to keep them chilled because one the shrimp goes bad it becomes super soft (making it tough to cast and easy for bait fish to steal your shrimp).
