One of the best baits for catching pompano are sand fleas. But the bad news about sand fleas is that they can be hard to keep alive (and lively, fresh sand fleas are a whole lot productive at catching pompano than non-fresh sand fleas).

So do you want to know the secret to catching (and keeping) sand fleas alive for up to 5 days (even if you don’t leave near the beach)?

The secret is to have two buckets:

1) A smaller bucket to hold the sand fleas that has a bunch of small holes drilled in the bottom
2) A larger bucket filled with ice that is big enough to hold the smaller bucket (but make sure the fleas don’t actually touch the ice)

Then, simply rinse out the bucket of sand fleas once per day with saltwater and place the fleas back on top of the iced bucket.

Pretty cool, huh?
