Complete Guide to High/Dirty Water

It is important to realize that High and Dirty water are not synonymous. You can have one without the other. Additionally, High water affects the entire waterway while Dirty water often only affects certain segments of the lake.

High Water:
Causes: most of the time it is due to increased rainfall in the immediate area resulting in run off. However, increased flow can come in from a reservoir upstream. Additionally, Work of individual dams or even rescue efforts can also cause high water events.
How much of a change makes a difference: There is a lot of variation from inches to feet. However, in most cases even a small change of 6 in can really move the fish around especially if they are shallow fish.
Duration: The longer the water stays “high” the more fish will be pulled to shallower water. Especially fish that normally stay deeper. This is prolong the pattern after the event.
Dirty Water:
Causes: Flooding or increased rainfall is the obvious cause. However, increased current can also cause sediment to dirty the water. Additionally, trash fish such as carp and buffalo as well as many aquatic birdlife can also cause isolated dirty water events.
Location: It is imperative to study your waterway to understand how these events affect the system as a whole. Dirty water is often a moving target where you can find clear or stained water up or further downstream. Homework can lead to quick decision without wasting time.
What is Dirty: This is a relative term. Many lakes are so clear that a change from 20 ft vis to 5 ft vis is dirty. For me, Chickamauga is often 3-4 ft vis so a change to sub 1ft is dirty and between 1-2 ft is stained.
Duration: Again the longer the water stays dirty the more fish are pushed to visible cover on the lake close to the bank.
Stained Water:
Fish are often still offshore and are comfortable grouping up on rock piles, road beds, points, shell bars, and current breaks.
Mud Line:
Anytime you find two clarities of water colliding it is often a great place to start. This will visibly show you a current break.
