In this video, we take you out to the Skyway Fishing Pier access road with Salt Strong Alliance and Florida DOT District 1 to explore wave attenuation devices (WADs), giant concrete pyramids that are protecting our coastline and creating new marine habitats.
Here’s what you’ll see:
Why these massive pyramids were installed (8.5–10.5 ft tall, up to 10,500 lbs each).
How they withstood hurricanes like Idalia, Milton, and Helene—protecting the shoreline, I-275, and the Skyway access road.
The unexpected benefits: seagrass growth, oyster attachment, improved water quality, and thriving fish nurseries.
Future projects to expand coastal resiliency, snorkeling parks, and oyster catcher mats.
This project shows how smart design can reduce erosion, build resilience, and create new opportunities for fishing, snorkeling, and conservation.
