Learn how to best skip a lure for inshore saltwater fishing in this educational video. It shows the essential steps you need to address when skipping a bait and then shows footage of me skipping under mangroves and catching snook.

To skip most effectively, be sure to do the following:

1) Start and end your cast with your lure close to the surface of the water… needs to start out parallel to the water surface.

2) Load the rod on the back swing… this builds static energy for your forward cast so you don’t have to exert a blast of energy to create enough lure speed for maximum skipping performance. Also, this allows the bait to have more of a direct (dart-like) trajectory which gives you more control on the exact direction it goes.

3) Use a spinning reel for skipping… it’s essential for the line to be going out as freely as possible, and using a bait casting reel would open you up to bird’s nests given that you don’t know exactly how far the lure will skip.
