On an autumn trip to northern Michigan, Shaw mines a mother lode of battling bass, largemouths and smallmouths both. Even though it’s chilly and windy with the coming of a cold front, nearly all these fish hit topwater baits — a far cry from the usual slow dredging with deeper lures this late in the year. It’s finesse fishing where you pick your spots carefully: weedy dropoffs, shady banks instead of bright cold-front sunshine.
