Overview – Tough conditions to attempt a challenge video. Even tougher to get the gummy worms to stay on the hook 😛 After every 4 casts so my worm would fly off because the sugary worms naturally dissolved in the warm water.
I tried several different ways to rig the worm in an attempt to get it to stick. Whether I wacky, texas, or nose-hooked em, they refused to stay on for more than a couple minutes. As a result, I burned through the entire bag of worms in about an hour.
Thankfully I decided to bring a bag of twizzlers with me, I wasn’t actually planning on fishing with them, but it turns out their tough exterior allowed them to stay on the hook for up to 10 minutes.
I decided to drop shot rig the twizzlers because Rusty got the first hit of the day fishing his senko in the middle of the pond. With the warm water and high pressure system, I assumed the bass were suspended a bit off the bottom in an inactive state.
The drop-shot rig is one of my go-tos in super tough conditions and it didn’t let me down today. Casting dead center into the pond, I must’ve landed the bait right in front of that bass’ mouth. After it sank to the bottom, I gave the rod tip a few gentle twitches, and then I felt that “thump” that every bass angler craves xD
The 3 lb bass put up a good fight but the small light wire gamakatsu hook stayed strong and I took the lead about an hour into the challenge.
With 30 minutes left in the challenge at 9:30 am, I was feeling pretty good when I hear Rusty yelled out “FISH ON!!!!” Rusty was standing on a raised ledge and he frantically tried to get to ground level even with the water as he played his fish.
The chunker give a few surprisingly acrobatic jumps for her size and it took Rusty a couple attempts until he had the challenge winning fish in his grasp (sorry again for messing up and not recording it :P). I knew he had me beat but with 25 minutes or so left in the challenge, all I had to do was land a single fish to retake the lead.
Time dwindled away until the challenge ended, but with 1 fish a piece, Rusty and I decided to add a secondary challenge: first one to catch another fish wins!!! We set a one hour time limit for this goal.
Since the gummy worm challenge was over, I decided to try out the backstabber crankbait I found. I always avoided buying them because they’re so expensive, so I was pretty stoked to find one at a golf course pond which normally doesn’t get a lot of pressure 😛
The bait ran true, had good rattles and a nice side-to-side wobbling action. The conditions were not ideal for a crankbait, or really any bait for that matter but I stuck with it because I wanted to learn a bit about my new lure.
