In this video, Luke goes over the difference between a circle hook and a j-hook.

Circle hooks are safer because it’s much tougher for a kid (or adult) to hook themselves with a circle hook compared to a j hook.

A circle hook is also better for the conservation of fishing (tougher for a fish to swallow), and it is much easier for a kid to set the the hook on a fish using a circle hook (all the have to do is reel or let the fish hook itself – no big hook set with the rod needed).

J-hooks play a role as well, but usually only need to be used for artificial lures or if catching really small bait fish.
