Overview – I got wet, very wet.

Aight time for the real overview, one of my subs, Will, was kind enough to invite me to his honey hole. A beautiful pond in Gaithersburg, MD, crystal clear water and filled with healthy vegetation (not sure the exact species). According to Will, there’s a healthy population of 1-1.5 lb bass but catching anything over 2 lbs can be a challenge.

The day started off great with Will catching the first bass before I even had a chance to tie on my LC gunfish. It took me a mere two casts before I had my first bass of the day inhale my bait. The fishing was fast and furious for the first 30 minutes of the day, with the two of us landing about 8 bass or so in the 1 lb range.

The rain steadily increased and the bite slowed down. With the increased surface disturbance, the bass weren’t noticing my gunfish or will’s popper fluttering on top of the water. Will decided to put on a senko while I tried a buzzbait, caffeine shad, and super spook. The fishing was dry despite the wet conditions (lol bad pun) for the next half an hour or so until Will landed his first senko fish of the day.

Will caught a steady number of fish on the senko while I picked up a fish on the gunfish but then decided to go with larger profile baits to see if I could catch a quality fish. I kept a big war eagle spinnerbait tied on for about 90 minutes or so hoping to entice one of the rare big fish in the pond to strike.

While no big fish were caught by me, something else interesting happened. At 6 pm, we had about an hour left to fish, and the monsoon-like rains were in full force. We saw a dodge truck drive up to the pond and a fisherman emerged.

“Wtf,” I thought out loud, “What crazy angler would come out in conditions like these?!”

Well, it turns it was one of my dedicated subscribers. Matt saw that I posted a story of me fishing at the pond on my snapchat and when he saw it on his phone, he recognized the pond and rushed over to fish with us! Matt used his goto bait, a strike king series 1 or KVD 1.0 squarebill crankbait in an orange craw pattern, I don’t remember the exact model, but he slayed some bass in a hurry!

He caught three in the next half an hour, with the biggest of the day between the three of us about 1.25-1.5 lbs. Amazingly, he also hooked into a smallmouth bass right before his parents came to tell him to get his ass back home 😛 The smallie got away but I’ll def be back to that pond one day to target some bronzebacks!

At 6:50, Will hooked into his 10th fish of the day and lost his last senko so we called it a day a few minutes early. One of the most common questions I get about bass fishing is “when is the best time to fish?” Here’s answer, “ANYTIME YOU CAN!!!”

It pays off in the long run to get experience fishing in various conditions, and you’ll be a more well rounded angler if you don’t worry about the weather as much as get off the couch and on the water every opportunity you have!
