Overview – Had a chance to explore another new spot thanks to a couple of my subscribers tipping me off. The pond is located at Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab but its open to the public from sunrise to sunset. No live bait is allowed and the pond itself is pretty small but has excellent shore access and obviously some quality fish.

I started of the morning making a loop around the pond with a buzzbait with no luck. The second loops around I threw a mann’s 1 baby 1 minus parallel to the bank and at about 10:30 am I landed my first bass. It was a dink, but anytime I fish somewhere I haven’t tried before my first goal is always to catch that first bass just to give me confidence that there are indeed bass in the pond/lake/reservoir/river/creek/ect.

I stuck with the crankbait for another 30 minutes but once it transitioned to early afternoon I decided to change tactics and throw a brush hog out deep since the shallow bite was happening.

Within 5 minutes of changing, I bombed a 50-60 yard cast to the furthest fountain near the middle of the pond. The bait took about 8-10 seconds to reach the bottom despite the heavy 1/2 ounce weight. I started my retrieve, alternating between shaking and jigging the bait 1-2 feet off the bottom, trying desperately to get any bass to notice it in the dingy 2-inch visibility water. About 20 seconds into my retrieve, I feel the slightest change in my bait, it wasn’t a bite, but the bait didn’t feel quite right. I removed all the slack out of my line as I gingerly felt for a fish which is when I felt that classic “thump.” Knowing I had a fish, I reeled in the remaining slack as I laid into a monster hookset knowing it would be tricky setting the hook into a fish with 50 yards of line in the water.

As soon as I felt the weigh of the fish, I know she was a good one. She put up a good fight, and even showed off her athleticism going completely airbourne mid-fight, an impressive feat considering her size and girth. Eventually, I landed the 5 lb bass and was disheartened to see that she was gut hooked. The combination of my 5 second delayed hookset and the use of fish attractant on my bait allowed the hawg to the take bait into her gullet. Using the proper hook removal technique, I managed to get the hook out safely and release her to keep fattening up on the abundance of shad in that little pond.

The bites were few and far between but after 4 hours of fishing I had landed a dink, a 5 lb bass, a 2.5 lber, and I snagged a shad.
